Alf Noland, Alisun Gilles, Bernelle Gilles, Ali Gilles, Vernor Gilles, and Caria Gilles. A language barrier precluded other potential new friendships for Elmer this year.

Ali Gilles is not willing to go on the journey; Inigo is fervent about going, however, and has decided that he will board the ship and leave his family behind. The group about to board the Anglicist has decided that, rather than Nevile Prasun naming himself captain outright, the passengers will decide who their captain will be democratically. Elmer Gilles's shipmates have decided that he would make the best captain, though Alejandro Gilles is hurt by the decision. Elmer Gilles was designated captain of the Anglicist, which will depart Gordonville shortly; he has never captained a ship before. The Anglicist, under command of Capt. Elmer Gilles, has left the harbor at Gordonville, Death Isle. The Anglicist is heading E at half-speed. As an act of mutiny, Alejandro Gilles is going to attempt to murder Capt. Elmer Gilles, whose decision-making aboard the Anglicist has been seen by some passengers as reckless and potentially life-endangering. Alejandro Gilles attempted to murder Capt. Elmer Gilles as an act of mutiny, but failed. A punishment is now being decided for Alejandro Gilles and his two conspirators in the failed mutiny attempt, Nevile Prasun and Bryn Prasun. Since there are no nearby uninhabited islands on which the conspirators could be marooned, they will be hanged aboard the ship. Capt. Elmer Gilles ordered the hanging of 19-year-old Nevile Prasun at sea aboard the Anglicist as capital punishment for a failed mutiny attempt in which Nevile tried to murder Elmer. Capt.
