Subject: Luo Guobao's Case

 This morning in my Beijing office I checked 777 Web
 site where I got the sad news about Luo Guobao, posted 
 by Wen Junshan 3 days ago.
 
 I tried to call his home in Nanjing right away but there
 was no answer. Finally I reached one of his collegues in 
 Nanjing Institute of Soil Sciences and got the following 
 information:
 
 Guobao's cancer was found in January. It is in late stage 
 because of delay for a few reasons. Since then he had
 one operation before the Chinese New Year. Right now he
 is receiving radiation/chemical treatment in "August 
 1st" Hospital in Nanjing, a cancer research and treatment
 center in that area. More operation is expected after
 the size of the tumor is (if it can be) reduced by the 
 current treatment.
 
 His wife is employed in Railroad. Since January she has
 been on a long term leave to take care of Guobao. So 
 far the institute does not have major problem to cover
 95% of the medical bill. Guobao and his wife have one 
 child.
 
 I am trying to contact Guobao's family and will give you
 a report as soon as possible. Based on what we know, I
 think there is a need for us to donate some money to his
 family for at least three purposes:
 
 1. To reduce his family's financial burden a little bit
 for reasons we all know very well;
 2. To show our love and care to a classmate before it is
 too late;
 3. To say thanks to Guobao for his contribution to our
 class and his help to many of us in Keda. Do you still
 remember his talent in math and his enthusiasm to share
 with others?
 
 I have some US dollar fund with me in Beijing for my 
 staying in China most time this year. I am willing to 
 do the bank transfer from Beijing for all donations to 
 his family. The fund becomes available to his family 
 in Nanjing within one day. 
 
 For 7773 classmates and other friends, if you want me
 to provide this service, you can send me an e-mail
 with the amount you donate. I'll convert some dollar
 into yuan, and transfer the fund in your name to Guobao
 family on the same day. You can send a check to me 
 later. This should be the fastest way. To avoid any
 potential problem, I'll publish the result in 777
 directory web site after each fund transfer. Please 
 don't send me such e-mail until I report result of 
 contacting his family.
 
 It is sad to see a classmate in such a condition. It 
 is time to show that we are classmates although we have
 not had chance to meet Guobao since Keda. I am looking
 forward to hearing other ideas how to show our love and
 support to Guobao on this board.
