Subject: Should we do something for ...

 Dear USTC777 Friends:

As you all knew that Prof. Huan Peihua passed away accidentally last month.

Several of us have circulated through emails discussing if there is something we all can do for this event. (Attached are some of these emails)

I had talked to Prof. Fu Rongshan over the phone on this matter. It appears that a minimum of $2000 would have to be raised if we would like to set up a scholarship in Huan Peihua’s name which would be awarded annually. The scholarship could be awarded to excellent students and could also be awarded to excellent teachers, I believe. We could discuss these issues further.

But first, I would like to ask if this objective of $2000 would be realistic and if this idea would get a general support among all of us, the USTC777’s. Reply from Lian-she Zhao is quite encouraging for he had pledged for $$ (see attached email).

Would you please take a few minutes to think about this and send us an email to voice your opinion?

I would like to suggest that all the emails be sent/posted to our USTC 777 WWW board at http://alumni.cse.ucsc.edu/~sdai/777reun/777.html I will also post this message there. Of course, you could your send reply to me at chen@oce.orst.edu.

 Thanks.

 Yongshun Chen

PS. The donation could be extended to include all 7th dept.’s alumni but let’s discuss first if we would want do it.

 Hi, Friends:

Here is Jian Lin's email. As he asked, should we do something for Prof.

 John,

 Thanks for your email.

Is anyone in 777 organizing something for Prof. Huang Peihua's passing
away? Although I do not know him that well, I think it is appropriate that
we send a letter to his family with the signatures of our classmates.
Can you email Dai Sa or Wen Junshan to see if they are interested in doing so?

 Jian

 Hi, there,

 Sure, we should do something.

Jian or John, could you draft a letter for all of us and send it over?

In addition to the letter, do you know any help needed for his family
 or....

 Thanks.

 Hi,

Zhao Lian-She also suggest donating money to Prof. Huang's
family. If we are going to do it we should send the money
together with the letter, and if so, could some one help to
 collect the money?

 Thanks!

 Jian,

I did talk to Prof. Fu Rongshan over the phone last Tuesday. I learned about
the accident and had asked Rongshan what we they have received so far from
overseas. He said they got lots of emails and had not received any donation
 in any form.

I asked the questions you raised in your email and discussed the possibility
of setting up a scholarship in Prof. Huang's name. He welcomed the idea and
suggested that $2000 is the minimum for a meaningful scholarship.

Most of the scholarship is awarded annually and is at least 1000 RMB apiece.
If we want to establish an annual award of > 1000 RMB, then a base of 20000
RMB is necessary to generate the 1000 RMB annually as interest. The interest
rate in China is very low, less than 4%.

One alternative to gain higher interest is to invest the base $$ in US, say
in a mutual fund and managed by a committee. The earned interest will be
 sent to USTC each year.

Do you think asking for a donation of $100 apiece among our fellow
classmates or any alumna from the 7th dept of USTC and raising over $2000 is realistic?

I forwarded your email to Dai Sa and Wen Junshun and they agreed something
 should be done.

Regarding the Earth institute, I talked with Youxue over the phone and had
suggested if Keda's Graduate School would be a target if Beida's choice fall
off the favor. I agree that the location of Keda prevent our interest to
recommend it as the hosting institution for the institute.

Hope everything go well on the ship and you will have your foot step on land soon.

 Yongshun,

Jian's idea is good. $2000 should be reachable. I will contribute $200 to the
fund personally, if the idea is agreeable to 777ers. The idea should be spread
 around.
