Introduction to Programming (Honors)

• Getting a Cats Account: If any student doesn't have a cats account, it is urgently important to get one. Here is a link to the instructions for doing so.
• Unix on Cats: We introduced several basic commands in unix. Here is a link to a basic introduction by the cats staff.
  • hostname - make sure you are logged on to cats!
  • mkdir directory name - create directory - useful for organizing files in a hierarchy
  • cd directory name - change directory
  • fs lq - check remaining quota
  • rm filename - remove a file - useful when running out of disk space!
  • ls - get a listing of files in current directory
  • cp filename1 filename2 - make another copy of file - useful for making backup copies of program when revising
  • mv filename1 filename2 - rename filename
  • pine - use email
• Newsgroup: We discussed the class newsgroup, how to subscribe, how to read, and how to post articles. We promoted the trn command for this purpose, although Pine also supports newsgroups. Here is a link to an introduction to trn.
  • Class newsgroup:ucsc.class.cmps13h
  • Subscribing: run the trn command, then g ucsc.class.cmps013h, then you will get a dialog to subscribe.
  • Reading: run the trn command.
  • Posting articles: in trn, use the f command to follow up, or the .f command for new thread.
• Editing Text Files in Unix: We introduced the vi text editor.

• Remote Connection to Cats: We introduced the ssh and sftp commands useful for working from home.
