CMPS/CMPE 200 -- Fall 2016
Homework 1
Due: 11am, October 4, 2016.
Objective:
Create your UCSC home page.
Description:
In academia and industry, it is very important to have a Web presence. Your home page will describe your research interests, skills, achievements, etc. It is where you can present your best foot forward, and then can update it as you accomplish new things.
For your first assignment,
create a professional-looking webpage at the url:
www.soe.ucsc.edu/~username.
You can be as fancy or as basic as you like.
If you decide to use wordpress.com,
then put code that forwards to the external site in your index.html.
Requirements:
-
The site must have at least 1 picture (preferably yourself rather than your pet).
-
You must have an "ABOUT" section that talks about your academic/professional interests
and what you are planning to do in grad school.
-
A section that links to all your papers and projects. If you don't
have published papers yet, you can add links to seminal papers in your
area(s) of research.
-
A section to describe other appropriate interests and passions, e.g. hobbies.
Resource:
You can create your index.html using a text editor (like how this assignment was created).
Or you can use tools like Wordpress
(http://www.wordpress.com or
http://wordpress.org).
You can make it more fancy and dynamic with design templates.
Some examples from last year's submissions are listed below:
Submission:
-
If you don't already have one, create a .html directory under your home directory.
Your webpage is saved as the index.html file in the .html directory.
Make sure that index.html is world readable.
The .html should have world read/execute permissions.
Check to make sure that your home page is accessible from a browser that's pointed to:
www.soe.ucsc.edu/~username.
Most common problem if it's not accessible is because of incorrect access permissions on the file.
To fix this on unix, you need to change the access permissions using:
chmod a+r index.html while you're in the .html directory.
To make the .html directory itself accessible, do:
chmod a+rx . while you're in the .html directory.
-
hwk1links.html
contains the list of submitted home pages so far.
-
You need to add a link to your newly created home page to the hwk1links.html page.
To do this, edit the following file
/cse/classes/cmps200/Fall16/assign/hwk1links.html.
Each line in this file contains a link to someone's web page.
The pattern for each link is the same.
To add a link to your web page,
duplicate the last link entry and change the link and name to yours.
Make sure you don't erase your classmate's entry.
-
Check that:
hwk1links.html
now contains your entry and you have not messed up the rest of the file.
-
You must ONLY use Plain-Text editors to add your homepage to hwk1links.html.
Do not use MS Word.
