Abe's reading lists

(Last Update: 07:07 PDT 19 August 2010 )

This list is only a very minor subset of the books Abe has read, containing only those that we recorded for a summer reading program or for school.

Abe was not a very early reader. The first indications of reading ability were when he was 3 years and 3 months old. Abe and I were in Logos, the used bookstore in downtown Santa Cruz, California Saturday evening (24 July 1999), browsing in the children's section. Abe brought me a book and said, "Please read me 'The Pig in the Pond.'" This was not a book I had seen before, so I asked him "Oh, is this a book they have at the Granary?" (The Granary was his preschool, which he went to half time---I'd read about a hundred of their books to Abe, but not all of them.) Abe said, "No, I just read the title."

We read the book, and, needless to say, I bought it. Later, when we were telling Michele (his Mom) about the incident, Abe said that he could only read one or two words. Perhaps he thought that we thought that he could read everything, and wouldn't read to him any more. (not likely!)

The first book that Abe read by himself was Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, on 3 Sept 2001 (age 5;6). This book has only about 50 distinct words. Over the next year, his reading ability exploded, going up at least six grade levels. On 2 May 2003 (end of 1st grade), he took the Scholastic Reading Inventory test and got a "lexile" of 1027, which put him at about an 8th grade reading level (7 years ahead of his age group). (See http://www.lexile.com/ for information about lexiles.) He retook the test in October 2003 (beginning of 2nd grade---the SRI has different questions every time you take it) and scored 1131. On 2 March 2005, his SRI score was 1250, which would give him an expected 86% comprehension rate on 12th-grade books, according to the lexile calculator at http://www.lexile.com/Calculator/LexileCalculator.asp On 10 June 2005, his SRI score was 1712, which seems anomalously high--I don't know what the test-retest reliability for these scores is.

Abe is a fast reader. I timed him on a couple pages of a "young adult" book, and he was reading at about 390 words per minute on 2 April 2005.

Reading Contests

There are, surprisingly enough, reading contests. Abe has never entered one, but I found the following on the web:
http://bookadventure.org/
http://www.rif.org/readingplanet/content/Summer_Reading05.mspx
Just read for a few hours in July and keep a log. Books and gift certificates as prizes.

General book lists

Finding new books for Abe is often a challenge. We have found some of the following lists to be useful:
http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=bookmediaawards
American Library Association's collection of various book and media awards. A comprehensive list.
http://www.employees.org/~clu/Page1/BrainyKid.html#Reading
Recommended Reading List for Gifted 4th and 5th Graders
http://www.dawcl.com/
Database of Award-Winning Children's Literature. I don't know how extensive the indexing is.
http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/book_selector/index_adv.asp
A searchable database of reviews of children's books. Reviews written by librarians of Buckinghamshire County Council. There were 1675 reviews as of 2 Jan 2005. Sampling a few---the reviews seem good, but there is no way to convert the reviews into a recommended reading list---you have to read each review to figure out if the book is worth looking for.
http://www.txla.org/groups/tba/index.html
Texas Bluebonnet Awards. TBA publish an annual list of 20 recent books, and students in 3rd-6th grades in Texas vote on their favorites (they have to read at least 5 to be able to vote).
http://www.txla.org/groups/yart/lonestar.html
Texas Lone Star Reading Lists. Recommended recreational reading for Texas students in grades 6, 7, or 8. Copyright must be in last 2 years.
http://www.txla.org/groups/yart/tayshaslists.html
Texas Tayshas Reading Lists Recommened recreational reading for Texas teens. Copyright must be in the last 2 years. Books on Bluebonnet or Lone Star lists are excluded.

Santa Cruz Public Library. In addition to the catalog, there are several local reference sources (local history, local endangered species list, ...) and circulation information.

Library Summer Reading program 2002

The library program this summer offered children a $1 coupon, called a sand dollar, for each edge-inch of reading (up to $20). They also had to read a newspaper article and a magazine article or website for each sand dollar. The hardest part was finding newspaper articles of interest to a 6-year-old. It turned out that one of the best sources was the question-and-answer column in the weekly Science Times section of the Tuesday New York Times. The program lasted from June 15 to July 27---Abe finished early, but we did not record the dates for all the books.

First grade

Abe's first-grade teacher, Kathy Mitchell, had all the parents keep a log of their children's reading. We did not record all the books Abe read, excluding very short books and books that he was re-reading that were already recorded. We also did not include books (mainly non-fiction) that he read sections of, but only books that he read cover-to-cover.
