In my first quarter at UCSC, when we were redesigning the curriculum, my experience in reading design reports at Cornell led me to insist that all engineering students take a course teaching the type of writing that engineers do. All the other faculty agreed with the need, as long as I was willing to teach the course.

The course has been a challenging one to teach, both because of the diversity of the students taking the course and because of the workload involved. For example, in Spring 1989, Dan Scripture and I had 63 students in the class, with over 20 different native languages. Generally the class has around 45 students, and 10-12 native languages.
