Windows XP Fresh Installation Procedure (Draft)

This procedure will allow the installation of Windows XP Professional from an unmodified Windows XP Professional install disc (with or without any service packs slipstreamed).

This procedure was distilled from the SANS Internet Storm Center document on how to survive the first day with Windows XP.

Installation Procedure

  1. Make sure the machine has no network cables attached.
  2. Install as normal through setting up an account and logging on.
  3. Navigate to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections, right click on "Local Area Connection" and select Properties.
  4. Uncheck "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".
  5. Click on the Advanced tab. Check the "Protect my computer and network by preventing or limiting access to this computer from the Internet". Click OK.
  6. Connect a network cable. It should autodetect and get a DHCP address.
  7. Go to Windows Update, install all patches.
  8. Reboot as necessary for patches. Return to Windows Update to make sure all patches installed (some need multiple iterations).
  9. Go back to the Network Connections control panel (Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections), right click on "Local Area Connection", and select Properties.
  10. Check "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".
  11. If necessary, click on the Advanced tab and uncheck the "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet" (this is not recommended by SoE techstaff). Click OK.
The machine should be all set for the standard Windows application installation process.
