ENG 156 - LINEAR STATISTICAL MODELS

General Description: This is an intermediate level statistics course covering theory, methods and applications of linear models. Main topics are: simple correlation and simple linear regression; multiple and partial correlation and multiple linear regression; analysis of variance (one and two ways); linear model diagnostic and validation and model selection. Case studies drawn from the natural, social and medical sciences will be presented to motivate and develop the methological aspects of the course. Prerequisites are: ENG 5 or 7 or Computer Engineering 107 or permission of the instructor.
Textbook:

A Second Course in Statistics: Regression Analysis (Fifth Edition). W. Mendenhall and T. Sincich. Prentice Hall.

Grading: There will be one midterm (35%, Tues., Feb. 5), two quizes (15%, Tues., Jan. 22 and 15%, Tues., Feb. 26) and a final exam (35%, Sat., March 16, 12:00-15:00). Exams and quizes will be based on the homeworks.
Homeworks: There will be weekly homeworks which will not be graded. Homeworks will give a very close indication of the material that will be covered in exams and quizes. Some of the homeworks will involve numerical exercises to be solved by the use of the statistical package R.
