Tailoring carbon nanotubes

Tom Yuzvinsky

Manipulation of individual nanotubes

I developed a platform for the manipulation of individual nanotubes.  A three-axis piezo-driven nanomanipulator provides the ability to pick up and place nanotubes with very high precision, allowing us to incorporate nanotubes into prefabricated devices.

Using this system, we are also able to create STM and AFM probes with carbon nanotube tips of any length by the application of electron beam cutting to shorten them as desired.

This platform has recently been used in studies of the thermal transport properties of suspended nanotubes and in the development of a nanotube-based cell nanoinjector.
