Stuff for work and play...

I'm a sixth year graduate student in Computational Biology at the UC Santa Cruz Department of Computer Science. Dr. David Haussler is my advisor, I also work with Jim Kent and Dr. Manuel Ares. Before starting my work with computers I was a biologist. I recieved my BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Santa Cruz in 1996.

Currently I'm working on a couple of exciting projects. The first one centers on alternative splicing. I've been constructing alternative splicing graphs from cDNA evidence and seeing how alterntive splicing is conserved in other genomes. You can see the results visualized on the UC Santa Cruz Human Genome Browser. I've been lucky enough to get a chance to work on the genome browser as it has been developed.

Bioinformatics requires skills in both Computer Science and Biology. Starting from scratch in either discipline can be difficult at best and very frustrating at worst. Here I've started some documentation to help people get going. Included are
