Many of the long intergenic and intronic stems predicted by EvoFold are known miRNAs (microRNAs). These show some strong characteristics: they reside in short segments and they have stems with relatively few bulges. A set of 187 novel miRNA candidates were defined on the basis of these criteria, 22 of these have since been confirmed (see table below).
