Course Description

This course covers the application of computer languages that are useful in manipulating the kind of data one sees in biomolecular databases. Data manipulation using Perl, SQL, and UNIX scripts are covered, as are Java and Matlab to a lesser extent. Lectures use bioinformatics examples to explain how these languages can be applied to data manipulation in this setting. Computer assignments give participants practice in using these languages in the bioinformatics setting. Some prior programming experience and access to the Internet and a Web browser are required.

Texts

I teach the Perl portion of this course from my short, concise book Perl For Bioinformatics available from amazon.com . If you prefer, you might use the text Beginning Perl For Bioinformatics instead, also available from the Amazon site.

Some recommendations for reading materials for the other components of the course will come shortly.
