Alexandra Holloway

Doctoral Candidate

I am a graduate student in computer science, studying under Sri Kurniawan at the Assistive Technology Lab in UC Santa Cruz.

My research interests are in the broad field of human-computer interaction, including user interfaces, assistive technology, video games and game design, and using serious games to promote healthy living and social change. Also, I have studied usability at the intersection of humans and big data (with Darrell Long and Ethan Miller).

In Summers 2008--10 I taught Computing Systems and Assembly Language Programming and associated lab, and have been a teaching assistant for the same class, as well as Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Architecture, and Computer and Game Console Architecture.

When I teach, I try to apply lessons I learned in the Institute for Science and Engineer Educators' Professional Development Program (ISEE PDP 2012): science as inquiry and engineering as design. I am mindful of differences among students, and try to foster an inclusive environment. My goal is to help students learn to ask questions.

I am the treasurer for Society for the Advancement of the Science of Digital Games (SASDG), the organization that hosts the annual Foundation of Digital Games (FDG) conference.

My research on The Prepared Partner, a video game to teach childbirth and childbirth support, was featured in CITRIS news (August 29, 2011), and on KUSP for an NPR segment (April 2, 2012).
