Homework #6

Assigned: 21 November
Due: Friday, November 30 at noon. No late homeworks accepted!

Please read this information on how to submit homework online. Hard copy of homework will not be accepted.

All work on this homework must be your own. Please read (and follow!) the academic honesty policy for this class.

  1. Is it possible to crack a message encrypted using a one-time pad? Why or why not?
  2. Your grades are all stored online in a single file readable by anyone with a Web browser. How can this file be protected so that only you can read your own grade? Remember, you can't store the actual password online because that file would also be readable by everyone.
  3. Problem 9.11 (page 668) in the text.
  4. Problem 9.17 (page 668) in the text.
  5. Problem 9.30 (page 669) in the text.
  6. Problem 9.33 (page 669) in the text.
  7. It has been claimed that diversity in operating systems makes it more difficult for hackers to bring down the entire Internet. Do you support this claim? Why or why not? How might a diversity of hardware and operating systems prevented the attack of Robert Morris' Internet worm?
