Kenneth Laws is a researcher and instructor at UCSC whose research interests lie primarily in the area of sensors and measurement systems for the marine environment. He received his Ph. D. in physics from U.C. Santa Cruz in 2001. His dissertation focused on developing techniques for High Frequency (HF) radar sensing of near-surface ocean currents. Since completion of his dissertation research he has continued to be involved with HF radar for sensing ocean winds, waves and currents and has worked on passive microwave sensing of ocean surface winds using satellite-based radiometers. He is currently involved with supporting the Coastal Ocean Currents Monitoring Program (COCMP) efforts to monitor surface currents along the entire California coast. Recently, he has also worked on development of small autonomous vehicles for sensor platforms in the marine environment. Beginning in 2008 he has been an instructor of the Dept. Senior Capstone Engineering Design Project Course, EE/CE 123A/B.
